Encrypt a message for your contact in 5 simple steps.

  1. Ask your contact to create a WebCrypt.it public key. and send it to you.
  2. Paste your contact's public key into the Receipient's public key field.
  3. Type your message into the Plain text field below.
  4. Click Encrypt message.
  5. Copy the encrypted message (using the button) and send it to your contact(s) through email, Slack, LinkedIn, WhatsApp or HipChat and other channles.

Only your contact will be able to read the message, because they know the password that matches their (recipient's) public key.

Decrypt a message you've received

Paste an encrypted message into the Encrypted text field below, enter your decryption password into the Password field if it is visible, and click Decrypt message.

WebCrypt.it saves your decryption password in your computer's RAM until you reload or close this browser tab. This means you only have to enter your password once (in this or the Home tab) after which don't have to enter it again unless you are:

  • Decrypting a message encrypted using a different public key.
  • Reloaded or closed this browser tab since you last entered your password.

How do I use WebCrypt.it?

Each tab (i.e., "Home", "Encrypt", and "Decrypt") offers usage guidance. Visit the Home to create a secure password or copy your public key.

How do I send an encrypted message to one of my contacts?
  1. Ask your contact(s) to send you their WebCrypt.it public key. They may create a public key now or enter their password to regenerate their public key.
  2. Once you have your contact's public key, click the Encrypt tab above and paste the key into the Recipient's public key field.
How do I read an encrypted message from my contacts?
  1. Visit the homepage, enter your WebCrypt.it password, and click Continue. You may skip this step if you haven't closed this browser tab since the last time you entered your password.
  2. Click the Decrypt tab above.
  3. Paste the message into the Encrypted message field.
  4. Click Decrypt message.
Is WebCrypt.it secure?

Security is always relative, but WebCrypt.it is a pretty good way of exchanging secure messages with your contacts. It uses a 1024 bit RSA algorithm to encrypt all messages.

Thanks to public/private key encryption it is safe to exchange these messages over unencrypted channels like email, social media, chat etc.

Can WebCrypt.it read my messages?

No, WebCrypt.it is a single static html file and some JavaScript that only run inside a web browser. Password entry, encryption, and decryption happen entirely in your browser and does not leave your device.

If you want to verify this for yourself, simply open this website, and disconnect your Internet connection. You'll find that the application still works.

How can I ensure the security of messages encrypted with WebCrypt.it?

Use a long and complex passphrase. We recommend using any of the below listed password managers to generate, store, and auto-fill your WebCrypt.it password:

Furthermore, WebCrypt.it is only secure when you're the only person that knows your password. Be sure to be careful of viruses, keyloggers, etc.

Help, I can't read an encrypted message!

You can only decrypt and read messages that are encrypted with your WebCrypt.it public key. You may be unable to decrypt an encrypted message for at least one of the following reasons:

  • Your contact may have used someone else's key to encrypt the message. Send them your public key again and ask them to use it to encrypt the message.
  • If you have multiple WebCrypt.it keys/passwords or a newly created password, you may be trying to decrypt a message with an incorrect/forgotten password. Each unique password produces a different key. Enter enter the correct password in the Home tab and try decrypting the message again or create create a new public key and have your contact encrypt the message with the new key.
